The project “Engage for SDG” – Youth Engagement with Sustainable Development Goals -, funded by FCT (Foundation for Science and Technology), seeks to understand how the personal moral domains of young adults (18 to 25 years old, as stipulated by the UN) influence news consumption. Can the use of moral domains in news narratives generate youth engagement in relation to the goals of the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), especially in the debate on climate change? This is our starting point for an investigation that is being developed in Brazil, Mozambique and Portugal. These countries experienced environmental anomalies in 2019, potentially caused by climate change and which were widely covered in international news. We will explore how exposure to those events, as well as other factors in the construction of individual morale, influence the reading of news about climate change and determine the engagement of young people with it.
